The Human Cost of War

Because MAW uses the arts to promote peace, we are proud to be hosting 'The Human Cost of War', an exhibition of quilts and arpilleras (South American textile pictures) curated by Roberta Bacic. These pieces have all been made by women in response to violence and conflict. The exhibition will be on show in the Imperial War Museum Cinema on Remembrance Sunday, and at St Ethelburga's Centre for Reconciliation and Peace from 18-21 November, with related events each day. Also on 21 November MAW will be at the Whitechapel Gallery for two separate events, the afternoon session using some of the quilts from 'The Human Cost of War'. On the morning of Remembrance Sunday, MAW will be holding its AGM at the Imperial War Museum (London) and Roberta Bacic will be speaking about the exhibition.

2009 Remembrance Sunday Lecture

MAW has arranged an exciting series of events for this November. On the afternoon of 8 November, Remembrance Sunday, we have our annual lecture in the Cinema of the Imperial War Museum (London). This year, the subject of the lecture is very timely. Because of our interest in the link between climate change and conflict, and the likelihood that global warming will lead to conflict and even major wars between nations, we are delighted that Dr Mark Levene will be speaking on 'Weapons of the Strong: what will states do in response to climate change?' The challenge is how humanity deals with the threat of climate–related conflict. Mark, the director of Crisis Forum, is an expert on the subject.

What is the Peace Map?...

To make people more aware of our often hidden peace history - there is more than enough about war history!?- MAW invites you to help us create our Peace Map of Britain. This will eventually be available via our website. This exciting project will feature memorials, statues, parks and other features which commemorate peacemakers, visionary ideas, and events promoting a world without war. London and Bradford already have their own peace trails which visitors can follow, and MAW organises an annual Children's Mystery Walk along the London Peace Trail. Such initiatives help to develop a culture of pece. MAW supporters have already sent us information about approximately 25 sites and this is being collated. But many counties are not yet represented, so if you think of a peace garden, statue, memorial commemorating a peace hero or heroine, a mural ,plaque, or other significant site which illuminates our peace history, please let us know. Download a copy of the Peace Map form to fill in - this gives you a good idea of what we are looking for. Click on the form at the end of the previous news item. We look forward to hearing from you!!

Peace Map - more entries needed! can you help?

The Peace Map of the British Isles continues to develop but we need more sites! So far the database has complete entries for the following: Tilgate Park Peace Garden, Crawley; St Aidan's Peace Church, Berwick-on-Tweed; Birmingham Peace Garden; Pinner Peace Garden; Greenham Peace Garden; Richmond Castle, N.Yorkshire; Wilfred Owen Memorial, Shrewsbury; Beachy Head Peace Path, Sussex; Nether Wasdale War Memorial Shelter, Cumbria; York St.John University Peace Garden; Cardiff Greenham Statue; Henry Richard Statue, Tregaron; Temple of Peace, Cardiff. As you can see, there is some variety, but we need more, so further publicity in other organisations or likely magazines would be good. Please copy the article that was in the last MAW newsletter and pass it on to your contacts and friends around the country! Once you have identified a suitable site, fill in this form to provide us with the information we need to include it on the database ( form to be added here shortly)

Speakers at AGM and Remembrance Lecture challenge and inspire

The serious implications of escalating climate change for increased world conflict, conveyed by some excellent graphics, were explained and discussed at our AGM by Dr Stuart Parkinson of Scientists for Global Responsibility. About 40 people heard his talk, at the Imperial War Museum, London,on Remembrance Sunday. This was followed by our AGM. Later, also at the Museum, about 150 people attended Kathy Galloway's lecture Hope in a Time of War,a religious perspective on peacemaking. We were welcomed to this by the new Director General of the Imperial War Museums, Diane Lees. Kathy is leader of the Iona Community, and her talk ranged across many strands of her subject - an early Christian saint, the evolution of Just War Theory, Christian pacifist theology, the dilemmas of striving to avoid the use of violence in the current age... read her inspiring talk in full, and find the link to download Stuart's presentation, by clicking on Events on our website
