Human Rights 1948 - 2008 Guest Speaker:
Geoffrey Robertson QC
Geoffrey Robertson QC is a Human Rights lawyer,
academic, author and broadcaster. He has appeared in landmark cases in the
European Courts of Human Rights and the International Criminal Tribunal for the
former Yugoslavia. He was the recipient of a 1993 Freedom of Information Award.
It is the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. At
present we are witnessing torture, Human Rights violations and erosion of

what has been achieved and what remains to be done to stop human rights abuses.

Bringing Democracy to Burma What can the UK
government do to promote and implement the rule of law and the UN Charter?
Tuesday 4th December 2007,
7-9 pm House of Lords, Committee Room 4A, London
Speakers include:
Rt. Hon. Lord (Peter) Archer Q.C. Anna Roberts (The Burma Campaign
UK) John Rowley (Gandhi Foundation)
The current deteriorating situation in Burma,
needs to be addressed urgently, where a military dominated government is
handling its people brutally, stamping out protest and curbing human rights and
civil liberties. The meeting will explore ways in which a dialogue can be
started between the detained opposition leader, Ann San Suu Kyi, and
Burmas junta for a change from the military dominated government to a
fully fledged democracy.
This meeting is another event in a series Action
for UN Renewal is organising to consider possible changes required for
leadership and momentum in reforms of the UN and foreign affairs of the UK.
These have become essential in the light of aggressive actions by the UK (and
US) governments which have seriously weakened international law, the UN
Charter, peace and development agenda.
