Peace Songs for Choirs

2018:  Sue Gilmurray writes:
"Vera is Vera Brittain, author of the memoir Testament of Youth, and mother of Shirley Williams (who gave the MAW Lecture some years ago). She was an intelligent, attractive, privileged young woman, who was appalled when her fiance, her brother and her best male friends were all killed in the war. A volunteer nurse during the war, and a successful writer thereafter, she devoted her life to opposing warfare, even when it brought her contempt and abuse.
In this year, the centenary of the Armistice, and a year which is emphasising the right of women to be taken seriously, I hope that Vera will be taken up and sung by choirs and singing groups, along with others from the collection."
Here is the 3-part arrangement,  and the lyrics.

2017:
This year's song  is 'Road to Peace', a composition by MAW committee member Sue Gilmurray.  There are two versions, a mixed choir arrangement and a 3-part female arrangement, which are accessible and useable on varied occasions - meetings, demonstrations, vigils. You can hear the audio version here.

2016: Billy Bragg's 'Between the wars' - updated for the present generation - is MAW's peace song for choirs for 2016. It's not just anti-war, but also anti-bigotry and pro-social justice. The music is here, and you can listen to the song here.

2015: 'If I had my way' - a new peace song for choirs. Polly Bolton uses the words of Harry Patch (1898 -2009) - last surviving British soldier to have fought in WW1. Hear it on Soundcloud, & download the music.

'14 for 2014'
As the centenary of the start of WW1 approached,  MAW offered 14 peace songs free to choirs.
While the first seven songs were by Sue Gilmurray (Hear them on Soundcloud!) the others are by seven different writers. They include one song for male voices (Tyne Cot) and one for female voices (Mothers).

Download all 14 songs or you can download the lyrics & music for any individual song.

'Ending War - A Recipe' by Robert Hinde

'Not this year, not in my lifetime, perhaps in yours, and with a strong probability in my grandchildren's lifetimes, war will be seen as an unacceptable way of settling disputes between states. The aim of this book is to hasten the day.'
